Activity 3:

Nestle: We found many false claims from Nestle such as stealing water from poor countries and selling illegal water that were prohibited to use. During the California drought, Nestle took water that could have been used. Nestle listed many claims on the page that are elaborated in detail about their goals and what they are trying to accomplish. Nestle focuses on waste reduction and clearing marine littering. They also made a claim that their Maggi noodles were safe but the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India banned their noodles, suggesting they were unsafe and hazardous for human consumption, causing Nestle to lose more than half a billion dollars.

The H&M company has a recycling program that claims they have clothing bins in store where you can bring in old, stained, torn up clothes and they will turn them into new and send them to different parts of the world to be resold into a new piece of clothing. Some people have been saying that the old clothes don't actually end up being remade and resold. One of our students have tried to contact the company and ask if these rumors are true, but they deny any knowledge of this happening and then hung up.

We took the challenge of contacting Volkswagen and finding out their plans to produce a clean way of transportation. There was a Volkswagen scandal in 2015 about how they said a vehicle produced clean energy but, they produced false advertisement and created a device to cheat on the emission tests. Now they are in the middle of planning a clean way of transportation but are facing challenges given by the laws and keeping it affordable.

Evaluation:

It was fun, as usual to work with other groups on making the world a better and more sustainable place for the future generations. It is fascinating to see how alike are young people from around the world in their opinions of the state of the Mother Earth.

On the other hand, it was very challenging to upload and collaborate within the circle. The wiki format is extremely limiting and hard to operate. Also, with the network restrictions in our school board we had a lot of trouble to connect with others via Skype.

For these reasons we will not be joining the GTP in the next year. Let us know if anything changes. It is too bad that we need to opt out due to technology restrictions.

Wishing you great summer and many successes in the future!
