Introduction:

Hello, dear friends!

We are happy to take part in the Global Teenager Project.

We are a class of 16 students from Latvia.

Latvia is a small contry in Northern Europe situated at the Baltic Sea with very beautiful nature. Our capital is Riga. Latvia is famous for its folk song and dance festivals and athletes.

We live in a small town Kraslava close to Russian, Belarussian and Lithuanian borders. It is surrounded by woods and lakes and crossed by the river Daugava. Our most popular landmarks are Plater Palace and St. Ludvig`s Catholic Church built in the 18th century.

Our school, Kraslava State Gymnasium is not big (200 students), but high rated. Apart from learning, students are involved in performing arts and sports activities. The most popular sports are volleyball, basketball and swimming as we have a swimming pool beside the school.

Contributions Challenges:

We chose this Challenge:

Hello!

We decided to work on the challenge „Affordable clean energy sources”

And this assignment:

Assignment 1: Affordable clean energy – how is it used?

Our learning goals are: to learn about clean energy sources in general and about the situation in Latvia.

In the beginning we had group discissions to see what we know about clean energy in Latvia.

When we summarized our ideas, we came to the following:

In Latvia we use solar energy, water energy and geothermal energy. They are most common and not hard to get, so it's very economical. We think that these kinds of energy are not dangerous and should be used more. They don't pollute the atmosphere and are very nature-friendly.

((Roberts, Liene, Rinalds)

Then we made a research using information on the Internet and found out the following:

  • What kinds of affordable clean energy sources are used in your country?

Consumption of renewable energy resources in Latvia: fuelwood (78% in 2015), water and wind energy (12%), biogas (6%), biofuel (3%) and others (charcoal, straw and other biomass) -  data of the Central Statistical Bureau.

We also learned about electricity produced from renewable energy resources: hydro power plants (67%), biomass electrical power plants and combined heat and power plants (14%), biogas combined heat and power plants (14%) and wind power plants (5%).

  • How effective are these kinds of energy sources if used in your country?

Latvia has 37.6% share of energy from renewable energy sources, and in Europe there are only two countries with more renewable sources of energy. According to Eurostat, the highest share of renewables in the EU is in Sweden (53.9%), Finland (39.3%) and Latvia (37.6%).

  • What plans are in place to promote and increase the use of affordable clean energy usage in your country?

Latvia has a goal to increase its share of renewables in energy consumption to 40% by 2020.

 (Janis, Richards, Rihards, Oskars, Liana)

Assignment 2: Creating Energy saving guide

Our learning goals are: to analize our behaviour and to come up with positive ideas.

At first, we had group discussions again about what we think of our policies and habits concerning energy saving. These are our thoughts summarized:

At home it`s usually parents who save energy, but children don't care about saving energy because they don't think about what it could do to our planet if we're not going to save energy. Children also don't care about their parents` money because they're not earning it. We think that students don't save energy at school because it's not their property.

 (Roberts, Liene, Rinalds)

However, when we completed a questionnaire „How do we treat the world?”, the results were a bit different: 67% of our class students always save water (and, as a result, electricity) at home when they make tea for themselves or brush their teeth, for example and 17more do it often.

Finally, we discussed what we should do to help the planet by saving energy:

In our country as well as in other countries:

  • We should save our planet by using transport that doesn't require any fuel and not to use transport that pollutes air.

  • We could stop using fossil fuels in factories which pollutes air the most.

As to us, there is something we can do, too:

  • Switch off the light, computers and other appliances that we are not using at the moment.

  • We should care about using electricity at school and switch it off not only in the classroom, but also in the corridors.

  • Not to drive by car, but go by bicycle or walk.

  • We have to save water both at home and at school as electricity is necessary to deliver running water and to purify it after it is used.

 (Janis, Richards, Rihards, Oskars, Liana)
